A rising issue in the United States, it is estimated that 9% of the elderly are abused. The elderly demographic is vulnerable from their age and physical conditions. This abuse can come from inside sources (family members or friends) and outside sources (nursing homes, strangers). These are the categories of elder abuse:

• Physical Abuse – Physical pain and abuse causing bodily injury, damage, or discomfort.
• Sexual Abuse – Non-consensual conduct including rape, sexual contact and molestation.
• Domestic Abuse – Physical abuse or violence by a intimate partner. Women tend to be higher at risk.
• Financial Abuse & Exploitation – Scams and fraudulent acts toward the elderly resulting in a financial loss.
• Emotional – Causing psychological  harm and anguish. Includes verbal and nonverbal conducts.
• Neglect & Self-Neglect – failure of a caregiver’s responsibilities to provide essential needs of life. Self neglect is when no caregiver is present inflicted upon themselves, often the elder person refuses any type of care.

These signs do not include everything, and it’s advised that any time you have a feeling something wrong is happening you take action.

• Essential needs not being taken care of (food, water, utilities), living conditions not sanitary or safe.
• Injuries occurred do not fit the explanation provided.
• Unexplained weight loss, elevated blood pressure.
• Finances not adding up, bills not being paid on time or at all.
• Relationship changes, arguments with caregivers, changes in personality.
• Your own feeling or “gut feeling” on whats happening – if something seems amiss it probably is.
