This blog contains information about what a majority of private investigators actually do while they are investigating cases. When people think “private investigator, they probably think “surveillance.” Surveillance is used to catch cheaters, those who are blackmailing, an individual abusing their child, insurance fraudsters, and many more. A question that I’ve been asked numerous times is, “how do you ‘learn’ surveillance?” Simply put, the art of surveillance is widely gained through experience. You have fast drivers, slow drivers, suburban areas, country areas, individuals extremely aware of their surroundings, and individuals who are totally oblivious to their surroundings. So what better way to learn how to properly conduct surveillance than going out in the field and EXPERIENCING it.
Some general tips for surveillance:
-
While following your suspect IT IS okay to lose them.
-
It’s not worth getting into an accident.
-
It’s not worth the ticket.
-
It is also not worth getting possibly ‘burned’ by driving ridiculously.
(2) Act normal.
-
As soon as someone sees a car parked like this… they will call the local police.
(3) Tinted window are helpful for keeping you concealed. But, keep in mind that they can work against you. A car with tinted windows, parked along the curb, in a fancy neighborhood, will lead to suspicious people and quite possibly, the police getting involved.
-
Lean back in your car (and act like you’re reading) when someone drives by.
-
Use a windshield sun shade and do surveillance out of the corner of it. I’ve done this numerous times and it has been extremely helpful.
-
Park where others are parked. Who knows… you may never be noticed.
(4) Have the right equipment.
-
Do research before purchasing a cameras. Make sure you are getting 1080P video.
-
Car mounted cameras are always a plus. I personally attach a GoPro to my dashboard, and just like that, I have a hands-free recording device while driving.
-
Have snacks. More specifically, lots of snacks and beverages. Doing surveillance can be boring and tiresome, so make sure you boost your energy with healthy food and drink.
(5) Know your suspect.
-
Ask your client what they know.
- Do your own research; you would be surprised what people post on social media!
