A growing problem in the United States, hundreds of thousands of elder individuals are taken advantage of and exploited (aoa.gov). Unfortunately, the abused are susceptible due to age and physical and mental conditions out of their control. Surprisingly, the accused can be trusted members of the family, strangers or friends. All states have laws and legislation against elder abuse but the problem isn’t getting any better.

Elder abuse occurs in obvious and and more subtle ways. These are a few types, however not limited to:

• Sexual – Not consented sexual contact
• Exploiting – Theft or fraud of financial, property or physical assets
• Physical – Pain inflicted physically, usually one of the easier types of abuse to detect
• Neglect – Failure of the responsible party to provide basic shelter, food and other essential life needs
• Emotional – Mental harm and distress causing long lasting effects to a persons way of life.
• Desertion – Complete abandonment by the responsible party.
• Self – Unfortunately due to age and other factors people neglect themselves. It’s also the most common form of abuse reported.

While one or more signs may not indicate abuse, you should use your best judgement and when in doubt call a professional for more advice.

• Relationships problems, often resulting in verbal arguments with elderly caregivers (nursing homes or individuals) and the seniors.
• Not enjoying the same activities? Depression? This is usually a huge sign of some form of mental abuse.
• Bank or financial problems out of nowhere? Senior citizens are one of the most exploited demographics.
• Marks, torn skin, chemical burns, bruises and other physical ailments are indicators of physical abuse and mistreatment of the elderly.
• Your gut feeling. While obvious, you know your loved ones more than anybody else. If you think something is wrong, take action before it is too late.
